Blackcurrant Plant Characteristics

The Ribes nigrum 'Titania' is a deciduous shrub known for its tremendous growth vigor. The 'Titania' variety was specially bred to improve the weaknesses of old varieties. Whereas many blackcurrant bushes used to suffer from diseases, the Titania is a real powerhouse that can withstand almost anything. The plant grows beautifully upright, which means the branches remain sturdy, even when they are completely laden with heavy clusters of berries in the summer.

One of the nicest characteristics of this plant is the scent. As soon as you touch the leaves or walk past them, you smell that typical, fresh blackcurrant scent. The leaves are fresh green and have a beautiful shape with three lobes. In autumn, the shrub changes color beautifully before shedding its leaves. In spring, around April or May, the flowers appear. They may not be as striking as a rose, but for the nature in your garden, they are worth their weight in gold. Bumblebees and bees love them, because they don't have many other places to find food during that period. So, with a Titania in your garden, you are directly giving biodiversity a helping hand. Another handy feature: the 'Titania' is self-pollinating. So, you don't necessarily need two bushes to get berries. Do you only have a small corner free? No problem, one bush manages perfectly well on its own. The berries grow in long clusters, which makes picking much easier than with varieties where the berries are scattered loosely. The fruits themselves are large, glossy black, and have a firm skin. As a result, they do not break immediately when you pick them. The combination of that strong growth, disease resistance, and top-quality berries makes this plant an absolute favorite.

How big does a blackcurrant bush get?

How big your Titania eventually becomes depends a bit on how you prune it, but usually the bush reaches a height of about 1.20 to 1.50 meters. It grows to about a meter wide. Because it continues to grow so vigorously, within a few years you will have a mature bush from which you can pick kilos of berries. Do you have a smaller garden? No worries; by pruning a little every year, you can very easily keep it at the desired size. So it actually fits in any garden, whether you have a huge plot of land or a cozy city garden.

Are blackcurrants poisonous?

No, absolutely not! For us humans, blackcurrants are actually incredibly healthy and safe to eat. Confusion often arises because shrubs with blackcurrants grow in the wild that *can* be dangerous, such as deadly nightshade or buckthorn. But with Ribes nigrum 'Titania', you have nothing to worry about. This is a pure fruit plant that has been used for centuries for juice and jam, among other things. When it comes to your faithful four-legged friend, it is a different story. Although blackcurrants are not directly fatal to dogs or cats like grapes can be, their digestive system is not built for them. If your dog nibbles on a large amount of berries from the bush, he may suffer from stomach or intestinal issues due to the high concentration of fruit acids. It is therefore wise to keep an eye on things if your pet likes to help with 'harvesting', but otherwise, you can enjoy your home-grown fruit with peace of mind. Ribes Nigrum Varieties There are a lot of blackcurrant varieties, but by no means are all equally suitable for the average garden. At Planten247, we have already made the selection for you and chosen the Ribes nigrum 'Titania' as the winner. The Titania is a so-called modern variety developed in Sweden. The goal was simple: to create a blackcurrant that does not get sick. And we succeeded! For example, the Titania is completely resistant to American gooseberry mildew, a fungus that often succumbed to old varieties such as the 'Boskoop Giant'. You might also come across varieties like 'Ben Lomond' or 'Bona' online. These also produce fine berries, but when it comes to how easily a plant grows, the Titania almost always wins. This is because it also thrives on soil types that are actually not quite ideal. Moreover, the Titania berries ripen very evenly. That is nice, because it allows you to harvest almost the entire bush in one or two sittings, instead of having to search for three berries every day for weeks. At Planten247, we stand for quality, which is why we consciously choose this variety. It is the best choice for anyone who wants a high yield without too much hassle.

Blackcurrant Plant

A blackcurrant plant is a jewel for your garden. In July, when the berries are ripe, the bush is laden with glossy, dark clusters that stand out beautifully against the green foliage. At Planten247, we see that people are increasingly mixing blackcurrants into their regular borders. So, it really doesn't have to be confined to a small vegetable patch at the back. The Titania gives your garden a beautiful, natural look and creates a lively atmosphere. You will see the berries slowly change color from green to red and eventually to deep black: a beautiful sight! You can also use blackcurrants to create an edible hedge. Plant a few in a row and you have a beautiful divider that you can also enjoy snacking on. Do take note: you are not the only one who loves those berries. Blackbirds and other birds love them too. If you want to keep the berries for yourself, we recommend hanging a net over them as soon as they turn black. This ensures that the birds don't run off with your harvest before you've had a chance to pick them.

Blackcurrant in a pot

Do you not have a large garden, but only a balcony or a roof terrace? No problem at all! A blackcurrant in a pot is an excellent idea. The 'Titania' is very well suited for this because it grows nicely upright and doesn't droop in all directions. At Planten247, we often receive photos from customers who have created a beautiful green corner on their balcony with a few fruit bushes in pots. It gives you that real outdoor feeling, right in the middle of the city.

If you are going to plant a blackcurrant in a pot, you do need to pay attention to a few things. First, the size of the pot: choose a pot of at least 15 to 20 liters. The more space the roots have, the larger the shrub will grow and the more berries you will get. Also, make sure there are drainage holes in the bottom of the pot. The Titania loves water, but it does not want to drown. Use good potting soil from Planten247 and mix in some organic fertilizer if desired. Because the plant in a pot cannot search for food in the soil itself, you need to help it a little. Provide some extra nutrients regularly in the spring and summer. Watering is especially important for a pot. On a sunny balcony, the soil in a pot dries out much faster than in the open ground. In the summer, when the berries are growing, you should actually check every day to see if the soil is still moist. If the shrub is too dry, it will drop its berries, and that would be a shame! Place the pot in a sunny spot, because the more sun the berries get, the sweeter they taste. A blackcurrant in a pot is therefore the perfect way to grow your own fruit in just a few square meters.

Are Blackcurrants Edible?

Yes! The blackcurrant is one of the tastiest and most versatile fruits you can have. When eaten straight from the bush, they taste deliciously fresh and slightly tart. However, the real strength of the 'Titania' lies in the processing. You are probably familiar with the taste of Cassis, but when you make it yourself from your own harvest, it tastes a thousand times better. You can also use the berries very well in baked goods such as muffins or pies. And did you know that you can even make tea from the leaves of the bush? The young leaves give off a delicious aroma. If you harvest in July, you can very easily freeze the berries you don't eat immediately. That way, you can still enjoy your summer harvest in the winter. Growing your own food gives so much satisfaction, and the taste of a fresh berry from your own garden really cannot be compared to what you buy in the supermarket.

Is a Blackcurrant healthy?

When it comes to health, the blackcurrant is a true champion. It is also known as a 'homegrown superfood'. Did you know that a blackcurrant contains up to three times more vitamin C than an orange? That is an insane amount! It is therefore the perfect fruit to give your immune system a significant boost. In addition, they are full of antioxidants. These are substances that help protect your body and are also good for your blood vessels and your eyes. It hardly gets healthier than this!

Blackcurrant plant Winter hardy

You absolutely do not have to worry about the winter with the Ribes nigrum 'Titania'. This plant is incredibly winter hardy. It survives temperatures down to -25 degrees Celsius without any problems. Winter can sometimes be unpredictable, but the Titania pulls through effortlessly. In winter, it loses its leaves and goes into a sort of 'dormant mode'. This is actually a good thing, because it needs that cold period to be able to sprout again full of energy in the spring.

Even if it freezes for a night in the spring while the plant is already starting to sprout, the Titania can usually handle it just fine. It is one of the hardiest varieties available. Do you have the plant in a pot? Then the roots are slightly more vulnerable because the cold enters the pot from all sides. In that case, you can wrap the pot for a while in the winter or place it in a sheltered spot. In open ground, you don't have to do anything at all: nature takes care of it itself!
