The best time to take cuttings from your Chinese Lantern Plant is in the spring or summer. During this growth period, the plant has the most energy to quickly form new roots. Although taking cuttings is possible in the autumn and winter, the process will take much longer due to the reduced growth rate.
There are several ways to propagate a Chinese Lantern Plant, but the most effective method is via stem cuttings. To do this, you cut off a piece of the vine and let it root.
Choose a healthy vine and cut off a piece of about 10-15 cm with a sharp and clean knife or scissors. Remove the lower leaves so that a few bare nodes remain. Let the cutting dry for a few hours so that the cut surface can dry out. This helps to prevent rot. Place the cutting in water or potting soil (see the next section for details). Ensure sufficient light and warmth, but avoid direct sunlight. A popular and simple method is to first place the Chinese Lantern Plant cutting in water rooting: Fill a glass or small vase with lukewarm water and place the cutting in it, ensuring the bare nodes are submerged. Place the glass in a bright spot, out of direct sunlight. Change the water every few days to prevent mold formation. Roots will appear after about 2-4 weeks. As soon as they are a few centimeters long, you can transfer the cutting to potting soil. Besides the Ceropegia woodii (Chinese Lantern Plant), there are other Ceropegia species that you can propagate by cuttings, such as: Ceropegia sandersonii (Parachute plant) Ceropegia linearis (a slimmer variant of the woodii) Ceropegia ampliata (with larger, tubular flowers) Most Ceropegia species can be propagated in the same way as the woodii, via stem cuttings or root tubers that sometimes grow on the tendrils. Stem cuttings are the most commonly used method to propagate a Ceropegia. By cutting a piece of a healthy tendril and letting it root, you can easily grow a new plant. This method is especially useful if you want to rejuvenate the plant or create a fuller appearance. Cut off a healthy tendril of about 10-15 cm. Remove the lower leaves so that the nodes are exposed. Let the cutting dry for a few hours to prevent rotting. Place the cutting in water or directly in potting soil. Place the cutting in a light, warm spot, out of direct sunlight. Wait until roots appear (2-4 weeks in water, slightly longer in soil). Transplant the cutting into potting soil as soon as the roots are strong enough. Some Ceropegia species, such as the woodii, form small tubers on their tendrils. These root tubers can easily be used to grow new plants. This is a natural way for the plant to propagate itself and an effective method for rapid growth. Look for tubers on the tendrils of the plant. Cut off a piece of tendril with a tuber attached. Place the tuber on moist potting soil, without burying it completely. Provide warmth and humidity, possibly using a plastic bag as a mini-greenhouse. Within a few weeks, roots and new shoots. Transplant the young plant as soon as it is strong enough. With these methods, you can easily expand your Ceropegia collection! Once your cuttings have rooted and are in potting soil, proper care is essential: Light: Place the young Ceropegia plants in a bright spot, but avoid direct sunlight. Water: Water moderately; The soil may dry out slightly between waterings. Temperature: Maintain a constant temperature of 18-24°C. Feeding: During the growing season (spring/summer), give a little houseplant food once a month. Read more: Ceropegia CareHow to propagate Chinese Lantern Plant?
