View full detailsWhat is Tuscan Jasmine - Star Jasmine?
Tuscan Jasmine, also known as Star Jasmine (Trachelospermum jasminoides), is a popular climbing plant loved for its graceful, star-shaped flowers and delightful fragrance. This plant blooms in the summer and attracts butterflies and bees, contributing to biodiversity in the garden. Tuscan Jasmine is an evergreen plant, meaning it retains its foliage even during the colder months. This makes it an excellent choice for creating an evergreen hedge or covering a fence. This plant is not related to true jasmine (Jasminum), but shares similar characteristics, such as the sweet fragrance and elegant growth habit.
Trachelospermum species
In addition to the well-known Trachelospermum jasminoides, there are several other species within this plant family. A common variety is Trachelospermum asiaticum, which has slightly smaller flowers and is more resistant to cold. This species also has varieties with variegated leaves, which provides an extra decorative effect in the garden. Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Star of Toscane’ is a special cultivar with yellowish flowers and an equally strong fragrance. All these species have in common that they grow slowly and, with their climbing or creeping growth habit, are perfect for covering walls, pergolas, or fences.
Jasmine as a climbing plant
Tuscan Jasmine is an ideal climbing plant due to its self-clinging growth habit. It winds itself around pergolas, trellises, or wires and can grow upwards without too much guidance. Because it is evergreen, it remains an attractive element in the garden all year round. Tuscan Jasmine grows relatively slowly, which means it does not quickly become overgrown and remains easy to maintain. Additionally, it tolerates pruning well, making it suitable for maintaining its shape. It grows best in a sunny or semi-shady location and requires well-draining soil.
Climbing Jasmine
Climbing Jasmine is another name for Tuscan Jasmine, as its climbing growth habit makes it extremely suitable for vertical gardens. Unlike some other climbing plants, it does not have aggressive roots that can damage walls. This allows it to safely grow against facades, fences, or pergolas without causing structural damage. However, it can also be used as a ground cover in borders. The combination of fragrance, flowering, and evergreen leaves makes it a versatile choice for many garden enthusiasts.
Tuscan Jasmine Fence
One of the most popular uses of Tuscan Jasmine is as fence covering. Because it is evergreen, it offers privacy and shelter all year round. By using a trellis or wire tensioning against the fence, the plant can easily attach itself and gradually cover the entire surface. In summer, the flowering provides a beautiful sight and a delightful fragrance, giving the garden a Mediterranean character. Tuscan Jasmine does not grow extremely fast, but with proper care and pruning, it can cover an entire fence in a few years.
Planting Time for Tuscan Jasmine
The best time to plant Tuscan Jasmine is in the spring or early autumn. During these periods, the soil is still sufficiently warm, which stimulates root growth. When planting, it is important to ensure well-draining, fertile soil. Tuscan Jasmine needs a sheltered spot, especially in the first few years, to grow well. After planting, the plant must be watered regularly, especially during dry periods. A layer of mulch around the roots helps retain moisture and protects against frost in winter.
Buying Tuscan Jasmine
When purchasing Tuscan Jasmine, it is important to pay attention to the quality of the plant. Choose a specimen with healthy, green leaves and sturdy roots. Tuscan Jasmine is available in garden centers, at specialized nurseries, and online. When purchasing online, pay attention to the delivery time and the way the plants are packaged to prevent damage during transport. Depending on the desired application, one can choose young plants or slightly larger specimens, which provide full coverage more quickly. By paying close attention to the location and care, this beautiful climbing plant can provide atmosphere and fragrance in the garden for years to come.
