Rose Plant

Roses are strong and prolific plants that provide color both indoors and outdoors. While the compact indoor rose brightens up the windowsill as a flowering houseplant, larger shrub roses or climbing roses in the garden form a reliable foundation for borders, among other things. These plants are available in a wide range of colors and are known for their long flowering period, which lasts all summer for many varieties. Although the location varies, they all require sufficient light and regular watering to perform optimally. Whether in a pot on a table or in the open ground, roses are versatile garden and houseplants that you can enjoy with minimal basic care.

What is a rose plant?

A rose plant is a woody, perennial plant belonging to the genus Rosa in the rose family (Rosaceae). Although we often associate the rose with romance and ornamental value, botanically speaking, it is an extremely robust survivor that has existed on Earth for millions of years. Thousands of different species and cultivars have been developed, ranging from wild botanical roses to modern tea hybrids and compact indoor roses. Characteristic of the rose are the compound leaves and stems that are often equipped with thorns (often incorrectly called prickles in common parlance). The flowers vary enormously in shape: from single-flowered, where the stamens are visible to bees, to very double flowers with dozens of petals forming a dense bud.

The rose is appreciated worldwide for its versatility. In landscape architecture, they are used as ground cover, climbing plants, solitary shrubs, or even as hedges. Indoors, we know the rose primarily as the potted rose, a miniature version specially cultivated to bloom in a living room climate. What makes the rose unique is that it is one of the few plants that combines a very long flowering period with an enormous variety of fragrance profiles, ranging from fresh and lemony to heavy and spicy. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced gardener, the rose is a plant that thrives anywhere with the right basic knowledge. The plant's structure consists of scaffold branches that lignify over time, from which new, young shoots grow every year, bearing the flower buds. At its core, the rose is a sun worshipper. The plant uses the sun's energy to produce the complex sugars needed for the production of the petals and the essential oils that provide the fragrance. A rose's root system is deep; the main roots dig deep into the soil in search of moisture and stability, while the finer root hairs absorb the necessary nutrients closer to the surface. Once established, this makes the rose a very resilient plant that can also take a beating. It is this combination of robustness and aesthetics that has made the rose one of the most widely planted crops in the world.

Rose plant characteristics

When looking at the characteristics of rose plants, the enormous diversity is immediately striking. One of the most important physiological features is the leaf structure. Most roses have odd-pinnate leaves, usually consisting of five to nine leaflets with a serrated edge. The color of the leaf can vary from light green to deep dark green with a reddish tint, often depending on the age of the shoot and the specific variety. Another prominent feature is the thorns. In nature, these serve not only as a defense mechanism against predation but also help climbing species to cling to surrounding vegetation. However, modern breeding has ensured that almost thornless varieties exist today, which can be beneficial for gardens where many children play or for indoor care.

The flowering pattern is perhaps the most praised characteristic. Roses can be 'one-time blooming', producing a spectacular explosion of flowers in the spring, or 'continuous blooming', meaning they continuously produce new buds from early summer until the first frost. The flowers themselves can be single (five petals), semi-double, or double. The color variation is virtually endless: from pure white and soft pastel shades to bright yellow, deep orange, and almost blackish-red. Only a truly blue rose does not exist naturally, because the plant lacks the gene for the blue pigment delphinidine. The fragrance is another essential characteristic; some roses have been selected for their visual presentation and hardly smell at all, while other varieties can fill an entire garden with their perfume.

In addition, roses possess a powerful regenerative capacity. When a rose is pruned back, the plant responds by activating dormant buds (the so-called 'eyes'), which leads to a rejuvenation of the shrub. This makes it possible to keep the shape and size of the plant well under control. In terms of growth forms, we see ground-covering roses that do not grow taller than 30-40 centimeters, shrub roses that grow up to one and a half meters, and climbing roses that effortlessly reach a height of four or five meters. The rootstock of most garden roses is often of a different, stronger variety (rootstock) onto which the noble rose has been budded (grafted), which gives the plant extra vigor and disease resistance.

How and where do I plant my roses?

Successfully planting a rose plant starts with the right location. The golden rule for almost all roses is: sunlight. Most varieties need at least six hours of direct sunlight per day to stay healthy and bloom profusely. A spot with too much shade often results in long, limp branches and increased susceptibility to fungal diseases such as powdery mildew or black spot. In addition, air circulation is of great importance. The leaves of a rose must be able to dry quickly after a rain shower; a place where the air is stagnant promotes disease. However, do not plant them in a place where there is a constant strong draft, as this can damage the flowers and cause the plant to dry out. The soil is the next crucial factor. Roses love nutrient-rich, deeply loosened soil. They thrive best in soil that retains moisture but allows excess water to drain away easily. Clay soil is often ideal because it is naturally rich in minerals, provided it is well-drained. In sandy soil, you must add extra organic material, such as composted manure or special rose mortar, to improve water management. When planting, dig a spacious hole, at least twice the size of the root ball. It is essential that the grafting point (the thickening where the branches emerge from the root) for garden roses is positioned approximately 3 to 5 centimeters below the ground. This protects the plant against frost and prevents the wild rootstock from sprouting.

After the rose has been placed in the planting hole, fill it with a mixture of the excavated soil and soil conditioner. Press the soil down firmly but gently with your foot so that no air bubbles remain around the roots. Give a generous amount of water immediately after planting, even if it is raining. This helps the soil settle around the roots. If you are planting multiple roses, take into account the eventual width of the bush; a good distance between the plants ensures that they do not crowd each other and that sufficient light and air reach each bush. With climbing roses, it is wise to place them about 30 centimeters from the wall or fence and guide the branches slightly directly towards their support point.

Potted roses

Not everyone has a large garden, but fortunately, the rose plant is also perfectly suitable for a pot on the terrace, balcony, or even indoors. However, there are a few extra points to consider when keeping roses in a pot. First of all, the choice of the pot itself is important. Roses have deep roots, so a tall, deep pot is always better than a wide, shallow dish. Ensure that there are holes at the bottom of the pot for drainage; roses do not like 'wet feet,' which can cause root rot. A layer of hydro granules at the bottom of the pot helps to optimize drainage. For roses in pots, the water requirement is much higher than for specimens in the open ground. Because the roots are limited to the contents of the pot and the soil dries out faster due to wind and sun, you must check frequently and daily during warm summer days whether the soil is still moist. Preferably water at the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves. Nutrition is also essential: because the plant quickly runs out of its supply due to the limited soil volume, regular fertilization is necessary. Use a liquid rose fertilizer or special slow-release granules to support flowering throughout the season. When keeping a potted rose indoors, humidity is often a challenge. The dry air from central heating can cause the plant to lose leaves or develop spider mites. Place the rose in a bright spot, but not directly above an active radiator. A bright, cool spot such as an unheated room or a conservatory is often ideal. Once the indoor rose has finished flowering, you can optionally place it outside in a larger pot or in the open ground, where it often begins a second life and develops into a compact shrub. Do not forget to repot the potted rose into fresh soil every two years to renew the soil structure and mineral supply.

Rose plants are winter hardy

Most rose plants that we use outdoors are very winter hardy and can survive Dutch winters without major problems. Many varieties can withstand temperatures as low as -15 or -20 degrees Celsius. Nevertheless, there are gradations in winter hardiness. Wild roses and old historical varieties are often the hardiest, while some highly cultivated tea hybrids or standard roses can be somewhat more sensitive to extreme frost combined with a harsh east wind. Winter hardiness is also influenced by the location; a rose in the open ground is better protected than a rose in a pot, where frost can reach the roots from all sides. To help your roses safely through the winter, you can take a few precautions. The most important is 'earthing up'. This involves creating a small mound of soil or compost around the base of the plant in late autumn, ensuring the grafting point and the lower buds are well covered. Should the plant freeze above ground, it will sprout healthily again in the spring from these protected areas. For standard roses, the graft union (on top of the stem) is the most vulnerable part. You can protect this by temporarily wrapping some fleece or straw around it during severe frost. Never use plastic, as this can cause the plant to suffocate or rot due to condensation.

During the winter, roses go into dormancy. They lose their leaves and stop growing. This is a natural process that helps the plant conserve energy and prepare for the new growing season. During this period, you do not need to water (except for potted plants during dry frost periods) and certainly not fertilize. Only in early spring, when the harshest frost has passed and the buds begin to swell, is it time for the major pruning. By cutting back the rose at the right time, you remove any frost-damaged branches and give the plant room to sprout vigorously and full of renewed energy.

Rose plant indoors or outdoors

The question of whether a rose plant belongs indoors or outdoors depends entirely on the species and the purpose. By nature, the rose is an outdoor plant. The wide variety of shrub roses, climbing roses, and standard roses requires the changing seasons, fresh outdoor air, and natural UV light to survive and bloom for years. Outdoors, the roots can dig deep, and the plant finds a natural balance with its environment. Most garden roses would wither indoors within a few weeks due to a lack of light and low humidity. The outdoor rose is a long-term investment that only grows more beautiful and stronger with age. Nevertheless, the indoor rose is a beloved sight in many living rooms. These so-called pot roses are specially cultivated to bloom intensively in a pot for a few weeks. They have smaller leaves and flowers and a very compact growth habit. Although they are sold as houseplants, at heart they remain outdoor plants. Indoors, the bloom is often spectacular, but temporary. Do you want to extend the lifespan of your indoor rose? Then place it in the brightest spot you have, keep the soil constantly moist, and give it a spot outside on the terrace after flowering. Many people are surprised by how well an indoor rose performs once it is planted in the open ground. The great advantage of outdoor roses is their robustness and the contribution they make to biodiversity. Single-flowered outdoor roses are an important source of pollen for bees and hoverflies, and in the autumn, some roses form rose hips that birds eat. Indoor roses, on the other hand, are intended purely for decoration and instant color in the home. They are an excellent alternative to a bouquet of cut flowers, as they bloom much longer with proper care. Whichever you choose, take the needs into account: outdoors, it is about soil quality and space; indoors, it is all about light intensity and preventing drying out due to heating.
