Why choose hardy ornamental grass for your garden?

Adding hardy ornamental grass to your garden design offers enormous added value, especially in autumn and winter. While many perennials die back above ground in winter, many grasses retain their silhouette or even their color. They give the garden a natural, almost poetic appearance when a layer of frost covers the plumes. Moreover, these grasses are extremely robust; they are frost-resistant and, once established, require hardly any extra care.

Which hardy ornamental grass stays green in winter?

Not all grasses behave the same way during the cold months. We distinguish between hardy grasses that wither above ground (but sprout again in spring) and species that remain truly evergreen. Carex morrowii (Sedge), such as the popular 'Ice Dance' or 'Evergold', is a beautiful example of a grass species that retains its fresh color even in the snow. Festuca glauca (Fescue) and Luzula sylvatica (Wood Rush) also provide a lasting green (or blue) accent when the rest of the garden is dormant.

How do you care for hardy ornamental grasses?

Caring for hardy ornamental grass is surprisingly simple, but depends on the type of grass. Deciduous species, such as Pennisetum (Fountain Grass) or Calamagrostis, should be cut back to about 10-15 centimeters above the ground in early spring (March). You only need to 'freshen up' the evergreen varieties by pulling out dead blades by hand or cutting away unsightly leaves. This ensures that the plant can immediately start the new growing season full of energy.

Thanks to their neutral and natural appearance, you can combine hardy ornamental grass with almost anything.
