What are the best-known and most popular evergreen ornamental grasses?
Among garden designers, an evergreen ornamental grass is an indispensable basic element. The most chosen species is undoubtedly Japanese sedge (Carex morrowii 'Ice Dance'), loved for its vigorous growth and bright white-green foliage. Blue fescue (Festuca glauca 'Elijah Bleu') is also an absolute winner; this evergreen ornamental grass retains its unique steel-blue color throughout all seasons. For lovers of a natural woodland look, Wood Rush (Luzula sylvatica) is very popular, as it remains beautifully green even in the darkest spots. These species form the backbone of a garden that never becomes boring.
The benefits of evergreen ornamental grass?
The greatest advantage of an evergreen ornamental grass is its constant visual value. While other plants go dormant and die back above ground, these grasses provide lasting volume and color in your border. This prevents your garden from looking bare or 'empty' in the winter. Additionally, evergreen grasses often require less maintenance; because they retain their foliage, you do not need to prune them back rigorously in the spring. Moreover, they offer shelter to beneficial insects and small garden animals throughout the year, contributing to a healthy ecosystem in your own backyard. Moreover, thanks to their robust nature, they are highly resistant to changing weather conditions.
What to look for when buying evergreen ornamental grass?
When selecting the right evergreen ornamental grass, there are several important factors to consider:
- Leaf retention: Check whether the variety is truly evergreen or if it merely retains a winter silhouette (like straw-colored grasses).
- Light requirements: Some evergreens, such as Festuca, require full sun, while Carex varieties actually thrive in (partial) shade.
- Moisture: Note that evergreen grasses in a pot dry out faster, even in winter, because their leaves continue to evaporate water.
- Growth habit: Choose compact clumps for a sleek look, or spreading varieties if you want dense ground cover. wishes.
What types of evergreen ornamental grass are there?
There is great diversity within the category of evergreen ornamental grass. You have the colorful varieties such as Carex 'Evergold' with its golden-yellow stripe, and the texture-rich species such as Beargrass (Festuca gautieri) that forms dense green cushions. Lilyturf (Liriope muscari) is also often included in this group due to its grass-like, evergreen foliage and beautiful autumn flowering. Whether you have a modern garden with clean lines or a lush woodland garden, there is always an evergreen ornamental grass that perfectly matches your garden preferences in terms of height and color.
How and where do I plant my evergreen ornamental grass?
An evergreen ornamental grass looks its best in places where there is 'visibility' all year round, such as along a driveway, next to the patio, or at the edge of a border. They form a perfect combination with flowering perennials and shrubs; in summer they serve as a calm base, and in winter they take over the leading role. When planting, it is essential to ensure well-draining soil. Although they are hardy, the roots of evergreen grasses can be damaged if they are constantly standing in water during the winter months. Plant them at the correct spacing so that the individual clumps receive sufficient air and light to retain their color.
How do I care for my evergreen ornamental grass?
The care of an evergreen ornamental grass differs significantly from that of deciduous varieties. The most important thing is that you do not cut these grasses back short in the spring. Instead, a 'refreshment' suffices: in March, remove the dead, brown blades from the clump with your hands or a coarse rake. We also call this 'combing out' the grass. This creates space for new growth without weakening the plant. Should an evergreen grass have become unsightly after a very harsh winter, you can optionally lightly trim the foliage. A little organic fertilizer in the spring stimulates fresh regrowth and deep leaf color.

Frequently asked questions about evergreen ornamental grasses
What is the difference between hardy and evergreen?
A hardy plant survives frost, but may die back above ground in winter (turn brown). An evergreen ornamental grass, however, is both: it not only survives the cold, but also retains its foliage and green color throughout the entire winter.
Do I need to water evergreen ornamental grass in winter?
Plants in the open ground usually manage just fine. However, an evergreen ornamental grass in a pot continues to evaporate water through its leaves, even when it is cold. During dry periods without frost, it is advisable to give these plants a small amount of water occasionally.
Why is my evergreen grass getting brown tips?
This can happen after a period of harsh easterly winds or severe frost. The plant then evaporates more moisture than the roots can absorb from the frozen ground. In the spring, you can simply cut off these brown tips, after which the plant will sprout fresh new growth from the center.
Are all Carex species evergreen?
Most Carex species in our assortment, such as 'Ice Dance' and 'Evergold', are indeed excellent evergreens. However, there are a few specific deciduous varieties, but at Planten247 we mainly select the best evergreen varieties for optimal garden enjoyment.
